WHAT IS RAKSHA BANDHAN?
Relationships are at the heart of each celebration, and this is especially true with Indian festivals. Every event draws the family together, necessitating a celebration. Raksha Bandhan honors one such relationship: that between a brother and a sister. It’s a day when siblings pray for each other’s health and happiness and exchange good wishes.
Raksha Bandhan is an auspicious festival celebrated in India. It is observed on Sharvana Poornima, which is the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month Sharavana. It is a festival of togetherness and love that is enthusiastically commemorated in all houses across the country. Raksha means protection, and Bandhan means a link, hence this celebration represents the protective relationship between a sister who ties the holy thread on her brother’s wrist. With this, the sister wishes her brother a good life and the brother assures her that he would defend her in all situations.
Spending the day in the presence of each other is a blessing for the siblings. But what if you and your brother stay in different countries? But first, let us understand more about the history and significance of this festival. Read on to find out.
HISTORY OF RAKSHABANDHAN
Raksha Bandhan is said to have originated on the day when Lord Krishna unintentionally cut his finger with the Sudarshan Chakra. Draupadi, the Pandavas’ wife, was in great distress when she saw him in pain, so she tore a piece of her vastra and bound it to Lord Krishna’s bleeding finger to relieve his suffering and stop the blood from flowing. Lord Krishna was extremely moved by her act and pledged to protect her from all the world’s sins in exchange.
He referred to it as the Raksha Sutra. And, as we know, when the Kauravas sought to humiliate her in court by attempting to disrobe her, Lord Krishna blessed his sister and caused the sari she was wearing to become infinite in length. As promised, her brother protected her from the perils in this manner.
The event has become a favorite among siblings, who engage in lighthearted and fun banter as the rest of the family gathers to observe the great moments. With time, not just brothers and sisters but even friends and distant relatives have begun to tie rakhi to each other. Many women also go to temples and tie threads to Lord Krishna’s idol, hoping and praying that the Lord will protect them from suffering.
